A decaying 1950s home becomes a laboratory of grief, failed resurrection, and things that should never have survived. Agonize casts players as teenagers investigating the disappearance of Charles Dwyer, a scientist whose attempts to bring back his dead family instead leave his property overrun by monstrous creations. The mood is claustrophobic and grim rather than action-heavy, with every unlit hallway, distant cry, and locked room suggesting that the house is still reacting to its owner’s experiments. Its horror comes from uncertainty: nobody knows exactly where the creatures are, what they need to kill them, or whether a teammate has just made a fatal mistake.

Survival revolves around searching rooms for notes, ingredients, equipment, and clues that reveal how Dwyer’s work spirals out of control. Players identify the threats stalking the house, then gather and combine the right materials to produce serums capable of stopping them; mixing the wrong formula can endanger the entire group. Agonize supports solo play but is built around online co-op for up to four people, where splitting up speeds the search while making everyone more vulnerable. Proximity voice chat and in-world radio communication turn coordination into a practical survival tool, since partners may be close enough to help, far enough to hear only static, or already in trouble behind a closed door.

Randomized enemy positions and encounters prevent the investigation from becoming a simple memorization exercise, giving repeated runs a more unsettled, unpredictable rhythm. A stripped-back interface keeps attention on the environment instead of constantly feeding players markers and warnings, while the realistic visual approach favors dark corners and uneasy detail over exaggerated spectacle. The potion-crafting focus gives Agonize a distinct identity among cooperative hauntings, closer to Phasmophobia’s teamwork pressure and puzzle logic than a straightforward monster-shooting game. It suits groups who enjoy communicating under stress, solving environmental problems, and accepting that caution matters more than bravado; solo horror fans can play, but coordinated teams get the strongest experience.
