Asterix & Obelix XXL: Romastered

A comic-book brawl across the ancient world gives this remaster its cheerful, old-school appeal. Set in 50 B.C., Asterix & Obelix XXL: Romastered sends the famously stubborn Gauls on a rescue mission after Roman forces raid their Armorican home and carry off its inhabitants. Asterix, Obelix, and Dogmatix travel from familiar French countryside to Egypt, Greece, Helvetia, and Rome, leaving piles of battered legionaries behind them. The mood stays playful throughout, with broad slapstick, colourful locations, and the irreverent spirit of the classic comics rather than historical seriousness.

Gameplay mixes third-person action, light platforming, environmental puzzles, and collectible hunting. Players alternate between nimble Asterix and immensely strong Obelix, using their different abilities to clear paths, activate mechanisms, and deal with enemy groups; Dogmatix also helps in specific situations. Combat centres on simple combos, throws, charges, and the magic potion that turns Asterix into a brief whirlwind of Roman-smashing power. Levels reward wandering off the main route for helmets, coins, secrets, and imprisoned villagers, while the straightforward controls make the adventure approachable even when a few jumps or encounters become demanding.

Romastered retains the structure of an early-2000s 3D platformer but gives it cleaner visuals, smoother presentation, and a useful Retro Mode that switches back to the original look. Extra challenge modes add reasons to revisit stages: Course Mode focuses on gathering every coin before time expires, Countdown Mode emphasizes quick runs to the exit, and Extreme Mode makes every fight considerably less forgiving. Its biggest strength is faithful personality—pirates, Vikings, Romans, exaggerated animation, and constant visual gags make the journey feel like an interactive Asterix album. Fans of Spyro-era collectathons, accessible action adventures, or the Gauls themselves find plenty to enjoy, while genre veterans should expect charming simplicity rather than deep combat systems.
