Dawn of Sorrow lets Soma Cruz steal enemy souls and combine their abilities into weapons and attacks, making experimentation a major part of its progression. Portrait of Ruin uses instant character switching between whip specialist Jonathan Morris and magic-user Charlotte Aulin, while its magical paintings lead to distinct worlds beyond the castle’s halls. Order of Ecclesia is the harshest and most methodical entry, asking Shanoa to absorb Glyph powers from enemies and carefully manage her attacks, elemental options, and resources; collection-wide rewind and quick-save tools make all four games much easier to approach on modern hardware.

What separates this set from a simple retro bundle is how differently its three flagship games handle exploration and character building while retaining Castlevania’s precise, satisfying combat. The new Haunted Castle version is a particularly worthwhile addition, transforming an obscure arcade curio into a brisk, attractive action platformer without replacing the original for preservation-minded players. Artwork galleries and other archival extras add welcome context, but the real value is having dozens of hours of dense, replayable Metroidvania design in one place. Fans of Symphony of the Night, Bloodstained, or demanding 2D exploration games should consider it essential, while newcomers benefit greatly from the added accessibility features.
