The Gulf War becomes a tense, boots-on-the-ground campaign where a four-person special forces unit carries out missions far beyond ordinary frontline fighting. Conflict: Desert Storm puts players in command of either Britain’s SAS or America’s Delta Force, sending them across Iraqi deserts, airfields, fortified compounds, and hostile cities. Its tone is more methodical than arcade-like: every patrol, sniper nest, minefield, and armoured vehicle can ruin an operation if the squad rushes in unprepared. The result is a classic military shooter built around the fantasy of leading a highly trained team behind enemy lines.

Players directly control one soldier at a time while issuing commands to the other three squad members, swapping between riflemen, demolition experts, snipers, and medics as the situation changes. Missions ask the team to destroy supply depots, rescue prisoners, infiltrate installations, eliminate key personnel, and survive attacks from infantry, tanks, and helicopters. Success depends on using cover, managing ammunition and medical supplies, choosing the right weapons, and positioning teammates intelligently rather than simply charging toward objectives. The campaign spans 15 missions, with a checkpoint-driven structure that makes cautious movement especially important when an ambush turns a clean plan into a desperate firefight.

What separates Conflict: Desert Storm from many shooters of its era is the balance between accessible third-person gunplay and light squad tactics. It is not as demanding as a full military simulation such as Operation Flashpoint, but it asks for more planning and patience than run-and-gun contemporaries. The controls, visuals, and friendly AI show their age, yet the ability to rotate through every squad role keeps missions varied and gives victories a satisfying tactical edge. Fans of older tactical action games, especially players who enjoy the later Conflict titles or the squad-command feel of early Ghost Recon, find plenty to like here; newcomers should arrive ready to forgive some early-2000s roughness.
