Dark Void

A broken world floating between dimensions turns a familiar third-person shooter into a pulpy sci-fi rescue mission. You play Will, a pilot stranded in the Void after a routine flight goes disastrously wrong, then pulled into a human resistance war against the alien Watchers. The mood lands somewhere between old-school serial adventure and grim survival tale, with ruined cities, immense drops, and towering machinery giving every battlefield a strong sense of scale. Dark Void’s main attraction is its rocket pack, which turns the fight for Earth’s future into a battle fought above, below, and along the sides of the environment.

Most encounters begin with conventional cover shooting, as Will uses rifles, pistols, and scavenged alien weapons to clear enemies from platforms and corridors. The jet pack gradually becomes the real star: it enables bursts of flight, airborne firefights, evasive maneuvers, and dogfights against enemy aircraft, while its upgrades improve mobility and combat options over the campaign. Vertical cover sections let Will cling to walls beside enormous chasms, lean out to fire, and send opponents falling into the abyss, creating a more exposed and tense alternative to standard waist-high-barrier combat. Progression is largely linear and story-driven, moving between ground battles, climbing sequences, flight challenges, and set-piece confrontations rather than offering an open world or deep character-building system.

Its willingness to build levels around height remains the feature that separates it from many shooters of its era. Flying never has the freedom or precision of a dedicated space-combat game, and some ground encounters show their age, but the switch from boots-on-the-ground shooting to jet-powered aerial action still gives the campaign a distinct rhythm. The retro-futurist setting and B-movie heroics make it feel like a lost companion to games such as Dark Sector, Lost Planet, and early Gears of War rather than a modern tactical shooter. Players who enjoy straightforward single-player action, sci-fi mysteries, and the fantasy of strapping on a jet pack will find its best moments genuinely memorable; those seeking refined gunplay or broad replay value may be less forgiving.
