Broken moments from Dragon Ball history become the battlefield in this fast, fan-focused action RPG. Rather than simply replaying Goku’s story, you create a Time Patroller and jump into distorted versions of iconic conflicts, from the Saiyan invasion to later saga showdowns. Toki Toki City serves as a futuristic hub where heroes, villains, trainers, and other player avatars gather between missions. The mood is energetic and unapologetically anime, built around spectacular ki blasts, dramatic transformations, and the pleasure of seeing familiar battles take unexpected turns.

Combat plays as a 3D arena brawler with light and heavy strings, throws, evasive moves, flight, ranged ki attacks, charged energy, and four equipped special techniques. Missions usually ask you to defeat waves of opponents or protect key characters while altered timelines create tougher enemy pairings and surprise conditions. Your avatar gains levels, earns equipment, collects attacks through Parallel Quests, and can be shaped around melee strength, ki supers, stamina, health, or mixed builds. Five playable races—Saiyan, Earthling, Majin, Namekian, and Frieza Race—offer different starting strengths and transformation options, while the Master system lets characters such as Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Krillin teach signature moves and occasionally support you in battle. Online play and cooperative Parallel Quests give the grind a social angle, though the core campaign remains fully playable alone.

What separates Xenoverse from standard licensed fighters is the custom-character fantasy: your own Dragon Ball warrior stands beside the series cast instead of watching from the sidelines. Its first-generation presentation and sometimes repetitive mission structure show their age, and combat lacks the polish of later entries, but the character-building loop remains compelling. Included DLC broadens the roster, quests, costumes, mentors, and skill options, giving completion-minded players considerably more to chase. Fans of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot’s nostalgia or Budokai Tenkaichi’s airborne spectacle will find a different, more RPG-driven take here, especially if they enjoy replaying missions for loot and abilities.
