Batman’s death leaves Gotham exposed, forcing Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin to inherit a city already sliding into chaos. Gotham Knights is a third-person open-world action RPG built around the uneasy idea of carrying a legacy while criminals, corrupt institutions, and old conspiracies fill the vacuum. Its version of Gotham is gloomy, rain-soaked, and surprisingly alive at street level, balancing neon-lit rooftops and wealthy districts against gang-controlled alleys, abandoned labs, and escalating nighttime crime. The story stands apart from the Arkham continuity, focusing on the four protégés as they investigate the Court of Owls, confront familiar supervillains, and find their own reasons to wear the symbol.

Patrols begin from the Belfry hub, where players choose a hero, craft gear, study case files, and head into the city for main missions, villain investigations, and spontaneous criminal incidents. Each Knight fights differently: Batgirl combines gadgets and brawling, Nightwing favors acrobatic strikes and support tools, Red Hood brings ranged firearms and brutal close combat, while Robin uses stealth, teleportation, and status effects. Combat revolves around evasions, timed attacks, elemental damage, momentum abilities, and loot-driven upgrades, so leveling and equipment matter more than in the Arkham games. Gotham can be explored alone or with one other player in online co-op, letting partners freely patrol together before joining missions, although the game does not offer local split-screen.

What distinguishes Gotham Knights is its willingness to make its heroes feel like distinct RPG classes rather than interchangeable skins, with separate skill trees, traversal powers, costumes, and combat rhythms. The city’s five boroughs provide a convincing comic-book playground, even if repetitive street crimes and gear grinding can make longer patrol sessions feel routine. Players wanting Arkham’s counter-heavy precision may need time to adjust, but fans of superhero co-op, character builds, and detective-flavored missions find plenty to enjoy. Gotham Knights suits newcomers who want a self-contained DC story, while veteran Batman fans get the most from its roster, lore references, and darker conspiracy plot.
