Halo: Campaign Evolved (v2026.08.17)

A shattered alien ring serves as the battlefield for a modern return to Master Chief’s first great campaign. Halo: Campaign Evolved keeps the lonely sci-fi atmosphere, large outdoor skirmishes, and escalating mystery that define the original, while rebuilding the presentation around sharper environments, revised cutscenes, and remastered audio. The tone shifts smoothly from heroic military action to unsettling science-fiction horror as the Covenant threat gives way to Halo’s far more dangerous secrets.

Encounters still revolve around Halo’s excellent weapon-and-grenade sandbox: players carry a limited arsenal, manage shields, use cover when necessary, and improvise with whatever firearms, plasma weapons, and vehicles the battlefield provides. Warthog runs, Ghost raids, and Scorpion assaults return, while expanded vehicle options include enemy hijacking and control of the Covenant Wraith, opening up more aggressive solutions to familiar fights. Nine weapons drawn from elsewhere in the series broaden the combat toolkit, and optional Skulls alter enemy behavior, player durability, ammunition, and other rules for replay runs with a serious challenge or a deliberately chaotic twist. The full campaign supports solo play or four-player online co-op, with cross-platform matchmaking and shared progression allowing PC and console squads to stay together.

Its biggest strength is the balance between preservation and expansion: the classic mission structure remains recognizable, but the added mechanics give veterans reasons to approach old arenas differently. Operation: Meteorite provides a separate three-mission story featuring Sgt. Johnson, new locations, enemies, and combat scenarios rather than merely retreading the known campaign. Players who enjoy the readable arena combat of Doom, the vehicle spectacle of Battlefield, or Halo’s distinctive shield-based gunfights find plenty to like here. Newcomers get an accessible entry point into the series, while longtime fans receive a more flexible, replayable version of a foundational console shooter.
