Play begins across numerous historical starting points, from the Yellow Turban crisis onward, with the option to create an original officer or assume a place among a huge roster of historical figures. Rulers oversee cities, money, recruitment, research, governors, diplomacy, and campaigns; serving officers chase promotions and influence within another lord’s faction; free officers trade, buy property, maintain private soldiers, and sell their services as mercenaries. Battles operate on several levels, including real-time legion engagements with terrain, formations, siege gear, naval clashes, and troop counters, plus turn-based card-driven duels and debates. Character growth revolves around command, martial, and mental disciplines, allowing specialized builds built around offense, counters, evasion, critical hits, or defensive tactics.

The strongest feature is the sheer range of lives available within one campaign. Relationships are not decorative: friendships, sworn siblings, mentors, marriage, children, parties, estates, caravans, pets, and family technology all feed into personal power and long-term political influence. A reactive officer population can form grudges, defect, rebel, establish factions, marry, and raise heirs, while disasters and shifting alliances keep the map from feeling static. Visual polish and the density of interconnected systems may feel rougher than Koei Tecmo’s more refined strategy games, and newcomers should expect a learning curve.
