September 1939 becomes the battlefield in a first-person shooter that looks at World War II before Normandy, Stalingrad, or the familiar Allied campaigns dominate the genre. Land of War – The Beginning follows the German invasion of Poland through the eyes of ordinary Polish soldiers, placing desperate defensive actions, damaged villages, forests, and fortified positions at the center of its campaign. Its tone is deliberately old-school: straightforward military action, recognizable period weaponry, and a focus on battles where survival often matters more than heroics. Rather than rewriting history into a power fantasy, it frames the opening days of the war as a tense, uneven fight against a better-equipped invading force.

Combat revolves around moving through linear mission areas, clearing enemy positions, defending key locations, and completing battlefield objectives under fire. Players use rifles, pistols, machine guns, grenades, and other era-appropriate equipment, with limited ammunition and enemy pressure encouraging more careful shooting than a modern run-and-gun FPS. Missions alternate between infantry skirmishes, defensive encounters, and larger clashes involving military vehicles and artillery, giving the campaign a changing sense of scale. The design clearly draws on the accessible, checkpoint-driven structure of early Medal of Honor and Call of Duty entries, so the emphasis stays on scripted combat scenarios rather than open-world freedom or deep tactical simulation.

The 1939 setting is the major reason to play it, since most WWII shooters skip directly past Poland’s defense and treat the invasion only as background history. Land of War gives its locations a grim, muddy atmosphere and makes familiar genre imagery feel less worn out by showing the conflict at its beginning. Production values and enemy behavior can feel closer to a modest independent throwback than a modern blockbuster, but that simplicity also makes its intentions clear: it wants to revive the direct, campaign-focused shooters of the early 2000s. Fans of Call of Duty, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, or overlooked WWII history will get the most from it, while newcomers should expect a rougher but unusually themed historical FPS.
