Rise of the Triad: Dark War is a gleefully excessive 1990s first-person shooter where a five-person HUNT squad storms an island fortress controlled by the sinister Triad. Its world runs on speed, secret passages, ludicrous death traps, and a cartoonishly brutal arsenal, giving the action a more arcade-like personality than its darker contemporaries. Floors rise and fall, walls conceal ambushes, and a wrong turn can send the player into spinning blades, fire jets, crushing boulders, or lava. The tone is violent but playful, built around the era’s love of impossible architecture and explosive spectacle.

Missions involve hunting for keys, clearing maze-like compounds, finding hidden areas, and surviving enemy-packed corridors while keeping an eye on health and armor. Players choose from five operatives with different speed, endurance, and accuracy traits, then gather conventional firearms alongside signature power-ups such as the Drunk Missile, Flamewall, Hand of God, and Dog Mode. Levels are unusually vertical for a shooter of its age, using jump pads, moving platforms, catwalks, and multiple floors to make navigation as dangerous as combat.
