From the first thrusts of Operation Barbarossa to the Soviet drive toward Berlin, it places entire corps and armies under the player’s command rather than focusing on individual soldiers. The tone is sober and methodical, with every advance carrying the risk of an exposed flank, a broken supply route, or a winter offensive that stalls in the mud. Both Germany and the Soviet Union are playable, letting players approach the campaign from either the aggressor’s or defender’s perspective.

Turns revolve around moving large formations across a full 3D map stretching from Berlin to Stalingrad, positioning units to seize territory, defend crucial approaches, and destroy enemy forces. Supply matters as much as combat strength: cutting rail and road connections can cripple an army, while neglecting your own logistics leaves powerful formations stranded. Fog of war limits perfect information, so scouting, cautious positioning, and reserves become essential when enemy intentions are unclear. Players can reinforce threatened sectors, choose a preferred difficulty level, and tackle either the enormous 108-turn grand campaign or shorter 16-turn operations based on Barbarossa, Case Blue, Citadel, and Bagration.

Seasonal warfare gives the campaign much of its personality, as summer mobility, autumn mud, and brutal winter conditions each demand different plans. Historical corps, armies, vehicles, and national forces give the battlefield a welcome sense of period scale, while the changing strategic situation prevents either side from relying on one simple tactic. Russian Front favors deliberate planning over flashy presentation, making victories feel earned through encirclements, defensive lines, and carefully timed counterattacks. Fans of Panzer Corps, Strategic Command, or classic hex-and-counter-style computer wargames should find its accessible turn structure appealing, while newcomers benefit from beginning with one of the shorter operations before committing to the full war.
